School Resource Deputies
The Sheriff’s Office has contracted with seven county school districts to provide eight dedicated deputies who serve elementary, middle and high schools. Each deputy brings their individual talents to each school and that school’s specific needs. At a minimum our School Resource Deputies provide our schools the following services:
Physical security and a crime suppressing presence at the school site and surrounding areas/communities. Work with school administrators to provide Restorative Justice to juveniles caught violating minor or misdemeanor crimes. Counsel at-risk students re: violent tendencies, thefts, vandalisms, rebellious behavior, and drug use and/or possession.
Educating school staff about options available to them either through the Education Code or the Penal Code when student discipline is necessary. Help school administrators identify any students who might pose a threat to either themselves or others and develop intervention strategies or intervene immediately to any imminent threats. Provide traffic control during peak periods. Assisting school staff with supervision of students during open recess times. Consulting with administrators and parents to develop behavior plans for at-risk students. When necessary and as a last resort, arrest criminal violators, prepare and submit crime reports, and testify during court proceedings.
Most importantly, developing respectful, friendly relationships with students, answering their law related questions, and encouraging them to think about possible consequences of spontaneous, risky, or unlawful behavior.
