California CCW Fingerprinting Requirements
Starting September 1, 2026, all California CCW renewals will require a new Live Scan fingerprint background check, regardless of whether your background has changed.
What’s Changing
Senate Bill 160 mandates that every CCW permit holder — no matter which county or agency issued their license — must submit Live Scan fingerprints as part of the renewal process. This replaces the previous practice where many renewals relied on the original application’s fingerprints if no new disqualifying records were found.
Why the Change
The goal is to ensure continuous, up-to-date background verification. Live Scan fingerprinting sends your biometric data to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) for review, which can detect new arrests, restraining orders, or other disqualifying factors since your last permit.
How the Renewal Process Works Now
- Submit your renewal application before your permit expires, through Permitium on the County of Kings website located at www.countyofkingsca.gov/public-safety/sheriff/concealed -weapon-permit.
- Schedule and complete Live Scan fingerprinting at the Kings County Sheriff’s Office. If Live Scans are completed at alternate police or sheriff’s departments, it could lead to a significant delay.
- Complete the state-mandated 8-hour renewal firearms training course.
- Wait for DOJ approval — processing can take several weeks.
- Receive your renewed permit card once approved.
Failure to comply could result in delays or denial of renewal. All renewal and Live Scan fees are to be paid by applicants.
