What do I do if I found an animal?
We recommend you bring any dog you found in Hanford City or unincorporated Kings County to our office, or you can call dispatch to have an animal control officer pick them up.
Cats are deemed free roaming in Kings County; therefore, Animal Services only takes in cats that are sick, injured, young and orphaned, or obviously owned (microchip, declawed, etc).
What do I do if I lost a pet?
We always say the best thing to do is to come to the shelter to see if your pet was picked up. You know your pet best, and describing an animal on the phone is not always the best way to see if they are here (we get lots of brown chihuahuas). You can also check 24petconnect.com; it updates every hour and has pictures of every animal in our care.
What areas does Kings County Animal Services service?
The unincorporated areas of Kings County, including Armona, Stratford, Kettleman City, and other areas outside of Hanford, Lemoore, Corcoran, and Avenal Cities.
Are there other shelters in Kings County?
Avenal Animal Shelter houses animals from Avenal, Corcoran, and Lemoore cities. They are located at 1284 Hydril Road, Avenal. Phone number – 559-633-3115
What animals am I allowed to have?
Contact your animal control department if you live in Hanford, Lemoore, Corcoran, or Avenal cities to inquire about local ordinances.

Why should I spay/neuter my pets?
Kings County is a mandatory spay/neuter county. As stated in the ordinance:
- Sec. 4-20. - Mandatory spaying or neutering of dogs and cats.
No person may own or harbor a dog or cat over the age of four months in violation of this section. All unaltered dogs or cats must be spayed or neutered or, in the case of an unaltered dog, be licensed in accordance with section 4-38.
Any person who owns or harbors a dog or cat which is unable to be spayed or neutered without a high likelihood of suffering serious bodily harm or death due to age, infirmity, or a medical condition, must obtain written verification of the inability from a licensed veterinarian. The writing must state whether the inability is permanent or temporary and, if temporary, when the dog or cat may be spayed or neutered in the future.
(Ord. No. 672, § 2, 6-30-15)
Some benefits of spaying/neutering include:
* Reduced number of accidental pregnancies and unwanted puppies and kittens.
* Helps protect female dogs against mammary cancer and diseases of the reproductive system.
* Helps protect male dogs against prostate enlargement & testicular cancers.
* Help dogs to be less aggressive with other dogs
* Less likely to roam or mark their territory.
